Non-surgical · Immediate results · All hair loss types
Scalp Micropigmentation is a specialist hair tattoo technique that uses needles 75% smaller than regular tattoo needles and organic carbon-based pigments designed specifically for scalp work. We place precise impressions in the most superficial layer of the skin to perfectly replicate the appearance of real hair follicles.
The result is the natural-looking appearance of a full head of freshly shaved hair — regardless of the extent of your hair loss. Unlike hair transplants, SMP carries no surgical risk, delivers visible results from session one, and works for every type of hair loss and every skin tone.
Six treatment applications — all delivered from one specialist clinic
The most popular treatment. Recreate a full buzz cut look after male pattern baldness using Alex James SMP's signature realism stubble effect, colour matched to your skin tone.
No two hairlines are ever the same — every hairline is fully customised to your face shape, natural hairline, ethnicity, age and desired style.
A shaved head is not required for this treatment — we tattoo through your existing hair, around your natural follicles. Adding pigmented follicles reduces the contrast between skin and hair, creating the appearance of a fuller, thicker head of hair.
This treatment does not affect any current or future hair growth.
SMP is used to increase density in transplanted areas non-invasively, using advanced techniques to replicate follicles for improved fullness. Ideal for clients whose transplant hasn't delivered the density they hoped for.
SMP is not exclusively for men. Our team specialises in increasing female density through carefully applied pigmentation techniques, adapted specifically to work with female hair patterns and styling preferences.
SMP camouflages hair loss for individuals with small or large bald patches by filling in gaps with natural-looking pigmentation. Pigments are carefully matched to your hair colour, blending bald spots seamlessly into surrounding areas.
SMP camouflages FUT strip and FUE donor scar areas by replicating missing follicles to blend the scar with the surrounding scalp. A highly effective solution for clients who feel self-conscious about their donor area after a transplant.

What to expect from consultation through to aftercare
We'll start with a conversation about your hair loss situation. This can be via phone, email, WhatsApp, or social media — whatever's most comfortable for you. We'll need to see your hair loss, which can be done by sending photos via WhatsApp, email, or Instagram, or we can arrange a video call or face-to-face consultation.
From here, we determine the best solution — whether that's the shaved look, camouflaging thinning hair or bald patches, or covering scars. Alex will walk you through the full treatment process and answer any questions. Having undergone SMP himself, you can see his results up close and get honest advice from someone who's been through the entire process firsthand.
Once you're happy with the suggested treatment plan, we'll book your sessions. Most clients require 3 sessions on average, though some may need 2 or 4 depending on their hair loss and healing. Sessions are scheduled approximately 2 weeks apart for the best results.
If you're going for the shaved look, in the week before your appointment keep your scalp moisturised and shave with clippers or a foil shaver to allow air access to the scalp. On the day, wash your head to remove any product. If you're adding density to existing hair, wash your hair on the day of treatment to allow accurate pigment colour matching.
Sessions typically run 2–4 hours depending on the extent of hair loss and the result you're working towards. In the first session we lay out your hairline and begin applying small pigment dots to replace missing follicles across the scalp and crown. The pigment shade is matched as closely as possible to your natural follicles, with a gradient used to blend naturally at the edges.
The second treatment is approximately 14 days after your first; the third is three weeks after your second. Each session adds further density and colour, eliminating the look of hair loss progressively. You'll notice an immediate difference after session one.
As the treatment heals the pigment will naturally lighten slightly to mimic the tone of a real hair follicle. Some redness on the scalp is normal for a few hours to a few days post-treatment depending on skin sensitivity.
Aftercare is essential for the best results. After each session you must follow the rules below. Without doing so, the treatment will not achieve the desired effect.
Three weeks after your final session the scalp will be fully healed and all normal daily activity can resume. We recommend ongoing use of SPF when exposing your scalp to sunlight.
Fading after session one: It's completely normal for treatment to lighten after the first session. Sessions two and three add density and create the fuller look — the first session is the foundation. Trust the process.
Pain relief: Clients vary — some experience slight discomfort, others none at all. Paracetamol, co-codamol, or ibuprofen can be taken before treatment. Please avoid aspirin unless it's prescribed medication, as it thins the blood. Let us know if you take it regularly and consult your GP.
Equipment: We use the finest equipment designed specifically for scalp micropigmentation, including multiple needle sizes to replicate different follicle sizes and achieve the most natural result possible.
What to expect in the long term
Scalp Micropigmentation typically lasts 2–5 years depending on skin type, sun exposure, and lifestyle. As it naturally lightens over time due to UV exposure, it continues to maintain the illusion of a shaved scalp. Touch-up sessions can maintain your result indefinitely.
Most clients shave every few days using a 0.5mm clipper or foil shaver, though this is personal preference. The key is finding the length that looks best on you — there's no strict requirement to maintain a specific length.
Including fair and red hair. When hair is shaved, follicles appear on a greyscale regardless of natural colour. We use lighter pigment shades to match fair-haired clients perfectly, achieving seamless, natural-looking results across all hair colours and skin tones.
SMP offers immediate results, no surgical risk, consistent outcomes for all hair loss levels, and is significantly more affordable than surgical alternatives. For a detailed comparison with hair transplants, medication, and other treatments, see our blog.
