Your SMP sessions are done. The hard part is over — now comes the part that determines how long those results actually last. Good aftercare in the first few weeks doesn't just help your SMP heal properly, it sets the foundation for years of natural-looking results.
This guide covers exactly what to do (and what to avoid) from day one through to the long-term habits that protect your investment. Follow it and your SMP will still look sharp years from now.

The rules that protect your results while your scalp heals
The first 10 days after treatment are when your scalp is most vulnerable. The pigment is settling into its permanent position and any disruption during this window can affect how your results heal and last. The rules are simple — they just require discipline.
Absolute don'ts in the first 10 days:
The most common early mistake is light exercise on days 2 or 3. Clients feel fine and think a short walk or gentle session won't matter. It does. Even mild sweating during the bonding window can displace pigment and create uneven healing. If in doubt, wait.

The products and technique that protect your pigment long-term
Once past the initial healing period, your daily cleansing and moisturising routine becomes the single biggest factor in how long your SMP lasts and how well it looks. The key is gentle, consistent care with the right products.
Standard shampoos strip the protective oils that keep your scalp healthy and cause premature pigment fading. Switch permanently — CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, Neutrogena Ultra Gentle, or Johnson's Baby Shampoo all work well.
Gentle circular massage with your fingertips. Never scrub aggressively — the scalp needs cleansing, not exfoliating.
Product buildup left on the scalp can cause irritation and affect pigment retention. Rinse until the water runs clear.
A clean towel pressed gently against the scalp. Rubbing creates friction that irritates healing skin and can accelerate fading.
A thin layer of a non-comedogenic moisturiser keeps the scalp hydrated and forms a protective barrier. Palmer's Cocoa Butter or CeraVe Daily Moisturising Lotion work well for most clients.

WhatsApp AlexUV exposure is the number one cause of premature SMP fading
If there's one aftercare habit that makes more difference than anything else over the long term, it's sun protection. UV radiation breaks down pigment gradually — and because it's cumulative, the damage happens slowly enough that most people don't notice until significant fading has already occurred.
This isn't just a summer concern. UV penetrates cloud cover and reflects off surfaces year-round. A few minutes of unprotected sun exposure every day adds up to hours over months.
During the first week after treatment, avoid direct sun entirely. After healing, SPF 30+ applied daily is the minimum. La Roche-Posay Anthelios, EltaMD UV Clear, and Neutrogena Ultra Sheer are all non-greasy formulas that work well on a shaved scalp.
The clients I see with the sharpest results after 4 or 5 years are without exception the ones who took sun protection seriously from day one. A few extra seconds in your morning routine is genuinely the single most impactful thing you can do for the longevity of your SMP.

When you can return to normal — and what to do when you do
Life doesn't stop after SMP treatment, and it shouldn't. You just need to know the timeline and a few simple protocols that protect your results when you return to normal activity.
Ongoing lifestyle habits that protect your SMP:
The simple habits that extend your SMP from 2 years to 5+
After the initial healing period, aftercare becomes about forming sustainable long-term habits rather than following strict rules. The clients who maintain the sharpest results years later aren't doing anything complicated — they've just made a few things automatic.
Touch-ups are a normal part of the SMP journey — not a sign something went wrong. Most clients with good aftercare habits go 4–6 years before needing any professional attention. When that time comes, a single session is usually all that's needed to restore the original crispness.
If you notice significant colour changes, uneven fading, or any signs of irritation that don't settle — get in touch with your practitioner rather than waiting. Small issues are far easier and cheaper to correct early.
