Alopecia presents differently for every person. At Alex James SMP, every alopecia treatment is assessed and planned individually — with honest advice about what SMP can realistically achieve for your specific situation.

Dedicated to excellence
The answer depends on the type and extent of your alopecia — and this is where honest assessment matters more than a sales pitch.
SMP works by placing pigment deposits into the scalp to replicate the appearance of hair follicles. For alopecia, that can mean filling in patchy areas to blend with surrounding hair, or — in cases of total hair loss — recreating the look of a closely shaved head across the whole scalp. Both are possible. Neither is a straightforward cookie-cutter treatment.
Alopecia SMP is more technically demanding than standard SMP. Patchy hair loss creates uneven edges and unpredictable borders. Total hair loss means working on a fully exposed scalp with no existing hair to blend with. The result needs to account for the possibility of further hair loss — because alopecia can be unpredictable.
Alex has treated several alopecia clients, both patchy and full. He’ll give you a straight assessment of what’s achievable for your specific situation, what the realistic outcome looks like, and whether SMP is actually the right approach — or whether PRP treatment might be worth considering first.

Had a really good insightful chat with Dawn about the whole process before booking myself in. Dawn is very professional and easy to talk to, she made everything clear which gave me so much confidence about giving this a go. If you’re having thoughts about PRP treatments then this is definitely the place to go. Results speak for themselves.Posted on MemeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing! I was so nervous taking on a new carer path but both Alex and Dawn were brilliant, you know your there to learn a new skill but you leave feeling confident, knowledgeable and knowing you have support for life. Any queries I've had since have been responded to promptly and being in a group were you can ask questions with others going through the journey is just amazing. Thank you!Posted on Keiron PTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently had SMP with Alex after years of deliberation. I spent quite a lot of time searching for the right person/practice and I certainly made a great choice. Alex was professional from the first conversations we had and was reassuring throughout. I had 4 sessions in total to get the finished look, which I am really happy with. Alex took his time to progressively build up the SMP over 3 main sessions. Patience is certainly key if you want a realistic and natural looking appearance and I trusted him from the off. The time in between sessions gives the SMP time to settle and also gives you time to get used to the changes and go back with any questions and suggestions for adjustments. Having a natural looking hairline is key and over the sessions Alex did a fantastic job of it. Alex takes great pride in giving people the best possible results and is something of a perfectionist. He also offered great advice on aftercare and hair trimmers, which was very helpful for me on my SMP journey. I will certainly use Alex for any future top up sessions.Posted on Elly BraithwaiteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Both Alex and Dawn provided the skills and knowledge throughout the course so brilliantly that I've qualified feeling confident and relaxed. All alopecia cases are assessed individually. SMP can be considered for:
ALOPECIA AREATA (patchy hair loss) Patchy alopecia creates areas of exposed scalp surrounded by existing hair. SMP can fill in these patches to blend with the surrounding hair and reduce the visibility of the patches. The challenge is that areata can be unpredictable — patches can change over time. Alex will discuss this honestly at your consultation.
ALOPECIA TOTALIS (complete scalp hair loss) Total hair loss across the scalp. SMP can recreate the appearance of a shaved head, giving definition and the illusion of hair follicles across the entire scalp. This is more involved work than standard SMP and is priced accordingly.
ALOPECIA UNIVERSALIS (total body hair loss) The absence of eyebrows and other facial hair adds complexity to how SMP results are perceived. Cases are assessed individually.
STRESS-INDUCED AND TRACTION ALOPECIA Hair loss caused by stress, tight hairstyles, or other external factors. Depending on the extent and whether regrowth is possible, SMP or PRP may be appropriate — or a combination of both.
In all cases, Alex will tell you honestly whether SMP is the right approach for your type and extent of hair loss.
How Alopecia SMP Works
Because every alopecia case is different, the process is planned individually at your consultation. Generally:
Alex will assess your type of alopecia, the extent of hair loss, your skin tone, and what a realistic outcome looks like. He’ll explain what SMP can and can’t achieve for your specific situation, and give you a firm quote before you commit to anything.
The number of sessions depends on the extent and type of alopecia. Patchy cases may require fewer sessions than full scalp treatments. All sessions are spaced 2–3 weeks apart to allow pigment to settle between each one.
Alopecia can be unpredictable. Alex will discuss how potential future hair loss might affect the result and what touch-up options are available if your hair loss progresses over time.
For clients where hair regrowth may still be possible, PRP treatment is worth discussing as an option alongside or before SMP. Alex can advise on whether this makes sense for your situation.
Alopecia SMP is not priced from a standard rate card. Because every case presents differently — in terms of the type of alopecia, the extent of hair loss, the complexity of blending, and the number of sessions required — pricing is quoted individually after a free consultation.
As a guide: alopecia SMP is priced higher than standard SMP. The additional complexity, time, and technical skill involved means the cost reflects the work rather than a fixed package price.

Ready to Transform Your Confidence?
Active alopecia — where patches are still appearing or changing — adds complexity to SMP treatment. If hair loss is ongoing, there's a risk that the treated areas will change after treatment. Alex will assess the activity and stability of your hair loss at consultation and advise on the right timing.
Yes, in some cases. PRP stimulates the scalp to encourage hair regrowth and can be used alongside SMP. For clients where some regrowth is still possible, this can be worth exploring before committing to SMP. Alex and Dawn between them can advise on the best approach for your situation.
Yes, when done correctly. The goal is to replicate the appearance of a closely shaved head — not a full head of hair. Alex has treated full alopecia cases and can show you examples of what the result looks like during your consultation.
Why is alopecia SMP more expensive than standard SMP?
Alopecia presents significantly more technical challenges than standard male pattern baldness. The absence of natural hairlines to reference, the unpredictability of the condition, the need to plan for future hair loss, and the complexity of blending in patchy cases all require additional skill, time, and sessions. The price reflects the work involved.
How do I get a quote?
WhatsApp Alex directly on +447763875362. Send a brief description of your situation and some photos if you're comfortable doing so — this lets Alex give you a more accurate initial assessment before the consultation.
SMP is worth considering if:
✓ You have patchy alopecia and want to reduce the visibility of patches
✓ You have total hair loss and want the appearance of a shaved head
✓ You’ve accepted the current state of your hair loss and want a long-term solution
✓ You understand the result replicates shaved stubble rather than growing hair
SMP may not be the right approach if:
✗ Your alopecia is very active and patches are changing frequently
✗ You’re still in early stages and regrowth treatments haven’t been explored
✗ You have expectations that SMP will replicate a full head of hair
If you’re unsure, the consultation will give you a clear answer. Alex will be straight with you about whether SMP makes sense for your situation — and point you toward alternatives if it doesn’t, including PRP.
Alopecia SMP is more involved than standard treatment — and getting the right advice before you commit is essential. Alex will give you a straight, honest assessment of what’s achievable for your specific type and extent of hair loss.
