Alex's hair started thinning rapidly in his mid-twenties.
He tried the usual routes — restoration lotions, hair
fibres — and watched them fail one by one. By the time
his hair had thinned to the point where concealment
wasn't working anymore, he started researching properly
and came across scalp micropigmentation.
He booked his own SMP in 2020. The result stopped him in
his tracks. Not just how it looked, but how quickly the
daily self-consciousness disappeared — the mirror checking,
the lighting awareness, the photos he'd been avoiding. He
knew almost immediately he wanted to do this for other
people.
At the time, Alex was working as a support worker for a
local end of life care company. He'd spent years helping
people through some of the hardest moments of their lives,
and that experience shaped how he approaches every client
consultation — with patience, honesty, and no pressure to
proceed unless it's genuinely the right thing for that
person.
He trained at Kevin Langley's highly reputable
academy and started seeing clients from a clinic he built
himself in his garage — still working his support worker
shifts alongside it.

Dawn joined Alex James SMP in 2022, bringing a background
in education and healthcare that fits the clinic's approach
exactly — thorough, client-focused, and more interested in
long-term results than quick sales.
She specialises in density work for both male and female
clients, leads all PRP hair treatments at the clinic, and
co-delivers the training academy courses alongside Alex.
As a qualified phlebotomist with four years of PRP
experience, she's the reason the clinic can offer advanced
treatments that most SMP-only clinics can't.

Our Journey to Where We Are Now
2020 - Started in a Garage
Alex converted his garage into a one-chair clinic in Rossendale and saw his first clients while still working full-time as a support worker. Every booking was word of mouth. Every result had to speak for itself.
2022 - Dawn Joins the Team
With demand growing, Dawn came on board as SMP artist and PRP specialist. The clinic added advanced treatments it couldn't offer before and began building the reputation for expertise that the training academy would later be built on.
2023 - First Standalone Clinic · First National Award
The clinic moved into its first external premises in Rawtenstall — a proper treatment space with room for training courses alongside client work. The same year, Alex James SMP was named Scalp Micropigmentation Clinic of the Year at the CorporateLiveWire Global Awards.
2024/2025 - Two Floors. Four Awards.
A move to the current two-floor clinic in Crawshawbooth gave the business a dedicated treatment floor and a full training facility. Since then: British Hair and Beauty Awards Winner (Training Centre of Excellence, 2024), Beauty & Aesthetics Awards Winner (Best Training Academy, 2025), and UK Small Business Awards Finalist (Best Hair Business, 2025).
