A receding hairline is one of the earliest and most visible signs of hair loss — and one of the most effective things SMP can address. At Alex James SMP, every hairline is designed specifically around your face shape, your remaining hair, and what will actually look natural on you.

Dedicated to excellence
SMP for a receding hairline works by placing tiny pigment deposits along and behind the hairline, recreating the appearance of hair follicles where the hair has thinned or retreated. Done well, the result looks like a freshly shaved head with a clean, natural hairline — not a drawn-on line.
The key word is natural. A hairline that looks too sharp, too straight, or too low will look done. Alex’s approach is to design a hairline that suits your age, your face shape, and the way your hair naturally grew — so the result looks like you, just with more hair.
Having undergone SMP himself, Alex understands what that distinction means in practice. It’s the reason clients describe results that nobody else can tell aren’t real.
✓ Recreates a natural hairline where hair has receded ✓ Works with your remaining hair, not against it ✓ Designed specifically for your face shape ✓ No surgery, no downtime, no daily maintenance ✓ Long-term results — typically 4–6 years before a touch-up

Had a really good insightful chat with Dawn about the whole process before booking myself in. Dawn is very professional and easy to talk to, she made everything clear which gave me so much confidence about giving this a go. If you’re having thoughts about PRP treatments then this is definitely the place to go. Results speak for themselves.Posted on MemeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing! I was so nervous taking on a new carer path but both Alex and Dawn were brilliant, you know your there to learn a new skill but you leave feeling confident, knowledgeable and knowing you have support for life. Any queries I've had since have been responded to promptly and being in a group were you can ask questions with others going through the journey is just amazing. Thank you!Posted on Keiron PTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently had SMP with Alex after years of deliberation. I spent quite a lot of time searching for the right person/practice and I certainly made a great choice. Alex was professional from the first conversations we had and was reassuring throughout. I had 4 sessions in total to get the finished look, which I am really happy with. Alex took his time to progressively build up the SMP over 3 main sessions. Patience is certainly key if you want a realistic and natural looking appearance and I trusted him from the off. The time in between sessions gives the SMP time to settle and also gives you time to get used to the changes and go back with any questions and suggestions for adjustments. Having a natural looking hairline is key and over the sessions Alex did a fantastic job of it. Alex takes great pride in giving people the best possible results and is something of a perfectionist. He also offered great advice on aftercare and hair trimmers, which was very helpful for me on my SMP journey. I will certainly use Alex for any future top up sessions.Posted on Elly BraithwaiteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This is the question most receding hairline clients ask — particularly those who still have a reasonable amount of hair on top.
The honest answer is: it depends on your specific situation, and Alex will discuss it with you at your consultation.
SMP works by matching the pigment to the look of a shaved head. If your remaining hair is worn longer, the SMP won’t blend naturally — the contrast between the short-stubble appearance of the SMP and longer hair on top will make it obvious. For the result to look seamless, the hair needs to be worn short enough that the SMP and the remaining hair appear consistent.
For some clients with mild recession, this is a fairly minor change. For others with more significant recession and thick hair elsewhere, it’s a bigger adjustment — and one worth thinking about honestly before committing.
Alex won’t tell every client they need to shave their head regardless of their situation. He’ll look at your specific hair, your level of recession, and give you an honest assessment of what will work. Some clients start cutting their hair shorter gradually before their first session to get used to the change. Others are already wearing it short and the transition is straightforward.
The consultation is the right place to work this through — it’s exactly what it’s for.
How It Works
The Process — 3 Sessions
Receding hairline SMP typically takes 3 sessions:
Alex will design your hairline at the start of the first session, taking into account your face shape, the natural position of your original hairline, and what will look proportional and realistic for your age. You’ll have input on the placement — but Alex will guide you toward what will actually look natural rather than what might seem appealing in theory. The first session lays down the initial outline and begins building density.
The second session deepens the result — adding layers of pigment, building density, and beginning to blend the SMP into your existing hair at the edges. This is where the result starts to look real rather than fresh.
The third session is for refinement. By this point the pigment has settled and any areas that need adjusting are addressed. This is the session that brings everything together.
Sessions are spaced 2–3 weeks apart to allow the pigment to settle properly between each one.
Receding hairline SMP starts from £1,250. The exact cost depends on the extent of recession and the amount of work involved — this is confirmed at your free consultation before anything is agreed.

Ready to Transform Your Confidence?
At the start of your first session, Alex draws the proposed hairline before any pigment is applied. You'll discuss the placement, height, and shape together — but Alex will guide the design based on what will look natural for your face shape and age rather than what might look appealing in isolation. A hairline that's too low or too straight will look artificial. The goal is always a result that looks like it was never done.
Yes. Pigment selection is part of the consultation process. Alex matches the pigment to your natural hair colour and skin tone so the SMP blends with your remaining hair rather than contrasting with it.
Typically 4–6 years before a touch-up is needed. The pigment fades gradually and naturally over time — it doesn't change colour or create a sharp contrast as it ages.
What's the difference between receding hairline SMP and full head SMP?
Full head SMP covers the entire scalp and is typically used for more advanced baldness. Receding hairline SMP focuses specifically on the hairline — recreating the front edge and temples. It's usually 3 sessions rather than the standard 3 main sessions for full coverage, and starts from a lower price point as a result.
Can I see results before I commit?
At your free consultation you'll see Alex's own SMP results in person. This is the most useful thing you can do before deciding — photos don't convey the same level of detail as seeing the work up close.
SMP works well for: ✓ Receding hairline at any stage — early to advanced ✓ Temple recession ✓ Frontal hairline loss ✓ Men who want to maintain some length on top (subject to consultation) ✓ Men who prefer the shaved/cropped look and want a defined hairline
SMP may not be the right solution if: ✗ You’re unwilling to wear your hair short — the result won’t blend with longer hair ✗ You have active scalp conditions that need treating first ✗ You have unrealistic expectations about matching a full head of hair
If you’re unsure, the consultation will give you a clear answer. Alex will tell you honestly if SMP isn’t suitable for your situation — and suggest alternatives if it isn’t.
No pressure. No obligation. Alex will give you an honest assessment of whether receding hairline SMP is right for your specific situation — including if he thinks it isn’t.
